A gastric sleeve is where the surgeon removes 2/3 of the stomach. This procedure also reduces appetite by removing cells that stimulate your hunger. These cells are called ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin is responsible for driving hunger. Leptin is responsible to keeping hunger cues 'on'. When there is an abundance of fat, leptin - which is stored in the fat cells, become resistant to the hormones that try to switch it off. As a consequence, leptin is on all the time, driving hunger/appetite. This affects weight gain. Removal of these cells is effective to prevent weight regain and promote weight loss. Figure 1: Gastric Sleeve Surgery Outline: The normal stomach (which is NOT enlarged in obese patients) holds about 1.5 litres of food. The stomach is reduced by removing the larger part of the stomach (see Figure 1). This large part of the stomach is removed completely. This leaves a small sleeve of the stomach that can only hold 150ml (1/2 cup). The stomach capacity is reduced by 70%. This means that you will not be able to eat as much as you used to. This procedure is restrictive and not malabsorptive. Benefits of the Surgery

It is so interesting to learn that the surgeon removes 2/3 of the stomach during a gastric sleeve to reduce appetite and hunger-inducing cells. My aunt has struggled with weight loss for a long time and is considering getting a lap band. I'll tell her about what I learned here to help.

Thanks for pointing out that gastric sleeve surgery can reduce hunger. This is helpful because I want to lose 10 lbs. within one month to have a healthier lifestyle. With this, I will be looking for a weight-loss program on Monday that can help me adopt a more focused lifestyle and get off of medications.

It's great to know that there is no re-routing of the intestines and they will not be affected as well in the surgery. I guess my sister would be able to undergo gastric bypass surgery without any concerns this year. She has been eyeing this type of procedure to finally address her issues with her weight which has been difficult for her to get rid of for the past three years now.

It was interesting to know that gastric sleeve surgery can cause hunger levels to decline. My friend is opting for bariatric surgery to fight obesity. I think it's best to go to a surgeon with high success rates.
